Speak and pray for Peace

A Prayer for the Middle East

God of mercy and compassion,
of grace and reconciliation,
pour your power upon all your children in the Middle East:
Jews, Muslims and Christians,
Palestinians and Israelis.
Let hatred be turned into love, fear to trust, despair to hope,
oppression to freedom, occupation to liberation,
that violent encounters may be replaced by loving embraces,
and peace and justice could be experienced by all.

A Hindu Peace Prayer

I desire neither earthly kingdom, nor even freedom from birth and death.
I desire only the deliverance from grief of all those afflicted by misery.
Oh Lord, lead us from the unreal to the real;
from darkness to light; from death to immortality.
May there be peace in celestial regions.
May there be peace on earth.
May the waters be appeasing.
May herbs be wholesome and may trees and plants bring peace to all.
May all beneficent beings bring peace to us.
May your wisdom spread peace all through the world.
May all things be a source of peace to all and to me.
Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti (Peace, peace, peace).

for Ukraine

33 years ago on 24th August, Ukraine regained its independence.
Today, Ukrainians fight to protect the freedom they conquered and safeguard the independence
that they own by undeniable right. For Ukrainians, independence means more than a status.

“Volia” (воля) is a Ukrainian concept that can be translated as “will” or “freedom” and the deliberate choice to be free.
On Ukraine’s Independence Day, the country celebrates the volia of the Ukrainian people which resulted in the choice to again become an independent state in 1991. We pray for them as Ukraine continues to proclaim that right.

Ukraine. Our land. Given by God. Kissed by the sun. Rocked by the winds. Tempered by fire.
Defended by its sons and daughters.
It cannot be mistaken for anything else.
It can never be given away to anyone.
Happy Independence Day of Ukraine!

Отче наш, що єси на небесах, Our Father….

Shamsia Hassani

If humanity does not rid the world of war;it will be war that will throw humanity out of history.

February 24th marks the beginning of the 3rd year of the War that Putin of Russia is waging against Ukraine.
There is a growing sense of weariness amongst Ukraine’s western allies and a preoccupation with other conflicts.
How easy to would be to abandon the people of Ukraine to a fate that is unthinkable. Above is artwork by Shamsai Hassani, the artist from Afghanistan who continues to draw our thoughts and prayers to the plight of our world and therefore of each other.
I have given the title of this piece, Our Father..the beginning of the Lord’s Prayer. It begins in Ukranian. If you are able, please pray it in your own language.

The prayer below is a response to a request by the United Reform Church (UK) made to young people who are refugees in the UK. They were asked what we should pray for on the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

Papaver

This photo is of poppies in a Dutch garden of my relatives in Lindelaan, near The Hague. They are headlined, Danielle’s Poppies and the photograph was taken by Marijke and Piet, friends of our family.

Our tears came like drops of blood
when in that garden of destruction
men died in trenches and the mud.
The Somme was void of living,
towns laid waste, homes wrecked,
people empty.

In the rubble of humanity we hid our seed,
our flowers the grave-markers of friend and foe:
a bitter proclamation of a conflict that needs remembering.
Blood red poppies – stained with futility.

But there is more.

Long ago, on a far away hill,
blood drenched the ground where a young warrior
offered up not myriad victims, but himself.
From a wooden cross, his death became his weapon.
Red – the colour of blood and of love –
transforming hatred and pointlessness
into peace and meaning.

Blood red poppies – we are heraldic flowers;
calling all to a new way,
a way of re-membering:
of piecing together all that is good,
peaceful and true.

A resurrected sign of God’s love.
